Civil Supplies

The Civil Supplies Department discharges the important responsibilities of enforcement of Public Distribution system, ensuring the discipline at markets as well as promotion of consumer awareness and protection of their interests. The Public Distribution System came into existence in the State, with effect from 01/07/1965. Keeping in view the importance and need of promotion of consumer awareness and protection of their rights, Government have formed a separate wing at the Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs Department in the State Secretariat to attend the subject, Consumer Affairs. The District Supply Office is functioning at the Civil Station, Kottayam. There are 5 Taluk Supply Offices under the District Supply Office. There are 991 ration shops in these Taluks. One NSFA depot in each Taluk for enabling ‘door to door’ delivery of ration commodities to all ration shops (ARD), came into be in June, 2017 in accordance with the National Food Security Act, 2013.The ‘e-Pose’ machine was introduced to all ration shops on 01.04.2018 for ration distribution to customers. Complaints regarding distribution of LPG can be given at the District and Taluk Supply Offices. The complaints of consumers can be filed before the Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum(CDRF), functioning at the Civil Station Building.

Mission and Vision

The primary function of the Civil Supplies Department is to run the Public Distribution System efficiently and to ensure distribution of rationed articles to the people at the price fixed by the Government. The department is also entrusted with the responsibility of ensuring availability of essential commodities in the market at reasonable price and prevention of hoarding, black-marketing and artificial price hike.
